Learn more about this calculator▾
Enter gross annual salary and select your state to estimate federal income tax, simplified state tax, FICA, and net annual and monthly take-home pay.
How to use this tool
Enter gross annual salary and filing status. Select a state or enter an optional flat state tax %. Add optional pre-tax 401(k) and HSA amounts, then calculate to see federal brackets, state, FICA, and net take-home. Pre-tax 401(k) and HSA amounts can be entered as dollars or a percent of gross salary.
Worked example
Example: $85,000 Single in Texas with no pre-tax deductions applies progressive federal brackets plus about $5,270 Social Security and Medicare, with $0 state income tax.
How it works
Estimates net annual and monthly salary using simplified recent-year progressive federal brackets (Single or Married filing jointly), an optional flat state tax percent (or a selected state’s simplified effective rate), FICA (Social Security up to the wage base, Medicare, and additional Medicare above $200,000), and optional pre-tax 401(k)/HSA deductions that reduce taxable income but not FICA.
Limitations
Results are estimates for educational purposes and are not financial or tax advice. Actual costs, rates, and rules vary.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is this annual tax liability or paycheck withholding?
This tool estimates annual income-tax liability from annual salary, then shows annual and monthly take-home figures. Actual paycheck withholding can differ because it follows your Form W-4, pay schedule, and employer payroll settings.
How are state taxes estimated?
The calculator uses a simplified estimated state income-tax rate. It does not model every state bracket, credit, reciprocal agreement, or local tax, so use it for planning rather than filing or payroll decisions.
Does it include FICA?
Yes. The estimate includes employee Social Security and Medicare taxes, including the Social Security wage-base limit. It does not replace employer payroll calculations.
What level of tax support does it provide?
It provides an educational planning estimate for common W-2 salary scenarios. For paycheck-specific withholding, use the Paycheck Calculator; for filing, credits, or complex income, use a payroll provider or qualified tax professional.
