Browser-based

Paste or type text to see live counts for words, sentences, characters, characters without spaces, and paragraphs, plus estimated reading and speaking time. Sentence counting is included here instead of a separate tool.

How to use this tool

1. Paste or type text into the editor. 2. Review live counts for words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs. 3. Note estimated reading and speaking times shown below. 4. Edit the text to see counts update instantly.

Worked example

Example: "Hello world. This is Utilnivo." gives 5 words, 2 sentences, and roughly one minute or less of reading time at default speeds.

How it works

The word counter updates as you type. Words are split on whitespace. Sentences are estimated from ending punctuation such as periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by blank lines. Reading and speaking times use common average speeds.

Limitations

Word boundaries follow whitespace splitting. Hyphenated terms and CJK text may count differently than other tools.

Privacy and file handling

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

Words are sequences of characters separated by whitespace. Empty text returns zero for all counts.

Does it count sentences?

Yes. Sentences are estimated from ending punctuation such as periods, question marks, and exclamation points. A trailing fragment without punctuation counts as a sentence.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time uses an average of about 200 words per minute. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute. For adjustable speeds, use the Reading-Time Calculator.
