Learn more about this calculator▾
Build a monthly budget from income sources and expense categories. See total income, total expenses, remaining balance, and each line item as a share of income so you can spot surplus or deficit at a glance.
How to use this tool
Add income sources and expense categories with amounts. For irregular costs, set Frequency to Annual ÷ 12. Calculate to see surplus or deficit, savings rate, and category shares.
Worked example
Example: $5,000 monthly salary with $1,500 rent and a $1,200/year insurance bill counts insurance as $100/month, for $1,600 total monthly expenses and a $3,400 surplus before other categories.
When to use this
- Creating a monthly spending plan for a new job or life change.
- Using 50/30/20 as a baseline to allocate take-home pay.
- Finding where to cut expenses to hit a savings goal.
- Planning a debt payoff month without missing essentials.
Common examples
- 50/30/20 baseline → allocate take-home pay into needs, wants, and savings buckets.
- New apartment move → budget rent + utilities + groceries to see what remains for savings.
- Debt payoff month → compare a higher savings rate vs extra debt payment scenarios.
Common mistakes
- Budgeting from gross pay instead of actual take-home.
- Forgetting annual bills (insurance, subscriptions) when planning monthly.
- Setting savings goals without leaving a buffer for surprises.
- Ignoring irregular expenses like travel or gifts until they cause overspend.
How it works
Totals monthly income and expense line items to show remaining cash, savings rate, and each category as a share of income. Expense rows can be marked annual so irregular costs (insurance, tuition, memberships) are divided by 12 and included in the monthly plan.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How does the budget planner work?
Add monthly income sources and expense categories with amounts. The planner totals both sides, shows remaining balance, and lists each item as a percentage of income.
What does remaining mean?
Remaining is total income minus total expenses. A positive value is a surplus, zero is balanced, and a negative value is a deficit.
Are taxes included?
No. Enter take-home income and the expenses you want to track. Taxes, interest, and investment returns are not calculated automatically.
