A mileage calculator (MPG calculator) turns two odometer readings and a fuel volume into real-world efficiency. Full-tank to full-tank is the classic method: fill up, note miles, drive, fill again, and divide distance by gallons added.

Worked example

Example A — start 12,450, end 12,760 (310 miles), 10.2 gallons → about 30.4 MPG. Example B — same tank at $3.60/gal → about $36.72 fuel cost and ~$0.12 per mile. Example C — 500 km on 40 L → 8.0 L/100 km (roughly 29.4 MPG).

Formula or method

Distance = end odometer − start odometer. MPG = distance ÷ fuel volume (gallons). L/100 km = (liters ÷ km) × 100. Trip cost ≈ fuel volume × price per unit; cost per mile ≈ trip cost ÷ distance.

How is MPG calculated?

Distance is end odometer minus start odometer. Miles per gallon equals distance divided by gallons of fuel used.

When should I record odometer readings?

For the most accurate fill-up mileage, record the odometer each time you fill the tank completely, and enter the gallons added at the current fill-up.

Is fuel price required?

No. Fuel price is optional. When provided, the calculator also estimates total fuel cost and cost per mile for the trip.

How do I calculate MPG from the odometer?
